Hi my printer gives the error “cartridge stalled” and I go through the whole realign process to fix it, then the cartridge slams against the side of the printer and the error reappears. I have also tried replacing the cartridge, everything I can think of. I am wondering if it is fixable or if it’s physically broken and I need to buy a new printer.

Hi @Elodur

The "cartridge stalled" error can be frustrating, and it typically indicates an issue with the movement of the printhead carriage. Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve the problem:

  1. Check for Obstructions:

    • Turn off the printer and open the access door.
    • Carefully inspect for any paper or debris that might be obstructing the carriage path and remove it.
  2. Manually Move the Carriage:

    • With the printer still off, gently try to move the printhead carriage left and right to ensure it can move freely. It should not hit the sides with force.
  3. Check Cartridge and Installation:

    • Remove and reinstall the ink cartridges to ensure they are seated properly in their slots.
  4. Perform a Power Reset:

    • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
    • Wait for about a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on to reset the system.
  5. Ensure the Printer is on a Flat Surface:

    • Make sure that your printer is placed on a flat, stable surface to prevent any mechanical issues.
  6. Firmware Update:

    • Check for any firmware updates for your printer via HP Smart app or HP’s support website, as updates can sometimes fix operational issues.
