HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdn
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently purchased a used HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdn. The previous user had not used it and received it from a relative. They were told it worked fine when they got it.

It did not come with any ink, so I purchased a black toner cartridge and installed it. The printer detected the cartridge just fine and only says I am out of all of the other colors. I also put paper in the tray.

I installed all the necessary files (through HP Smart), reset the network security settings, reset the administrator password and enabled all features.

I then changed all required settings to allow me to print in black ink only (at least all that I could find).

I double-checked for any firmware updates, but it was already fully up to date.

With the printer turned on, and everything seemingly set to go... I try printing a "printer status report" from the HP Smart Tools menu. All that pops up is:

Print Printer Status Report

The printer is busy. Try again later.

Click "OK" to go back.

So I go back and try to print a quality diagnostic report in the Utilities section of HP Smart. All I get is the same message. "The printer is busy. Try again later." Nothing else is in the printer queue, there are no jobs waiting to be printed.

I tried powercycling the printer several times and it doesn't fix anything.

A couple things to note here...

1. When i open my "Devices and Printers" section of the control panel and click on the printer, it does say its connected to the network, but under "Status" it says "Attention required". I'm assuming this is just because it is missing all of the toner except black?

2. Checking the usage report, this printer only has 2186 pages printed. This doesn't seem like much for this type of printer. This combined with the fact that the printer itself looks brand-new without any damage, dings, scuffs or any signs of use whatsoever, leads me to believe that it is likely not a hardware issue.

3. When i try to print anything outside of HP Smart, it sends the item to the printer queue, but it just sits in the queue and doesn't print anything.

So do I have to actually have all types of toner in the machine to even print in just black? Did i miss a setting somewhere?
