I do realise my printer is old.  But seems to have begun a couple of months ago with an HP upgrade ?? that messages it no longer recognises this series of printers.  Computer WILL successfully instigate scans from that printer; scan Doctor on computer will instruct and carry out test pages - printed just fine. So it cannot be a cabling problem, it works!  It has for over a year suffered with inability to clear print jobs from the list occasionally - then with Scan Doctor you get to re-print the page that had already been printed - but it does clear.  I see many complaints online from people who have suffered frustration with the same problems - but no real answer/confession from HP - except it talks about HP Smart Printers.  Is there a setting that removes the HP Smart Printer comment?

Had difficulty finding the genuine HP SUPPORT PHONE NUMBER for Sydney 131047 - connected to a man in Phillipines who was polite and slowly talked me through it all, spoken English very clear.  So very grateful.  For whatever reason the default setting to my Deskjet 2050 had changed to HP Smart Printer (that I do not have).  So with his instructions, it is back on track.  So simple, but why after 8 years did the default setting change ... itself?  ALSO had intermittent issues with Print jobs getting stuck in the queue after it had printed out an item.   Go through Settings Printers, a couple of steps to Printing Preferences, then into (on mine) Advanced and paper was set at "letters" - changed it to A4.  And so far no hiccups.  Hope that helps someone else.
