Hi @Cisco_Printer14,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Connection Error: 500" when printing from an iPad to your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281cdw suggests a communication issue between the iOS device and the printer. Since printing from your HP laptop works fine, it seems to be an issue specific to AirPrint or email-based printing on your iPad.

Check Printer Connectivity

  • Ensure your printer is connected to the same WiFi network as your iPad.
  • Restart both the printer and the iPad.
  • Check for any error messages on the printer’s display panel.

Restart the Print System on iPad

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & Wi-Fi and toggle both off and on.
  • Restart the iPad and try printing again.

Check AirPrint Support

  • Open Safari or Notes and try printing a simple page (not an email attachment).
  • If that prints, the issue may be specific to the email app.

Print Email Attachments Correctly

  • Instead of printing directly from the email app, try:
    • Downloading the attachment first and then opening it in a different app like Files, Preview, or Adobe Reader.
    • Then select Share > Print and choose your HP printer.

Remove and Re-add the Printer

  • On the iPad:
    1. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Select your Printer (if listed under Wi-Fi Direct) and Forget this Network.
    2. Open Safari > type “123.hp.com” and follow instructions to reinstall your printer.
    3. Restart both devices and try printing again.

Check HP Smart App (if using)

  • If you use the HP Smart app, ensure it is updated.
  • Try printing from within HP Smart rather than directly from Mail.

Reset Printer Network Settings

If none of the above steps work:

  • On the printer control panel, go to:
    • Setup > Network Setup > Restore Network Defaults.
  • Reconnect the printer to WiFi and try printing again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
