Subject: HP Printer Printing Unwanted Messages Continuously

Dear HP Support,

I am experiencing an issue with my HP printer where it is continuously printing unwanted messages. These messages appear to contain technical data, and an example of the content is as follows:

Content-Length: 179, Content-Type: application/ipp

This behavior occurs repeatedly, wasting paper and ink, and seems unrelated to any printing tasks I have initiated.

Steps Taken to Troubleshoot:

  1. I have restarted the printer multiple times.
  2. I ensured no active print jobs are pending in the queue.
  3. I checked my network settings for any unauthorized access or unusual activity.

Despite these efforts, the issue persists.

Printer Model: LaserJet Pro MFP M226dn

I suspect this could be related to an IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) error or a configuration issue. Could you please assist in resolving this matter?

Thank you for your support.

Avijit Jana

Hi @Avijit10,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M226dn is printing unwanted technical messages, which could indeed be related to a configuration or communication issue, such as a malfunctioning print job, an incorrect print protocol, or even unauthorized access.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

1. Clear Any Stuck Print Jobs

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers (on your PC) or Printers and Scanners (on Windows 10/11).
  • Right-click your printer and select See what's printing.
  • Clear all pending print jobs in the queue, even if there doesn’t appear to be anything active.

2. Check the Printer’s Web Interface

  • Access the Printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS):
    • Ensure that the printer is connected to your network.
    • Open a web browser and enter the printer’s IP address in the address bar (you can find the printer's IP address by printing a Network Configuration Page from the printer's control panel).
    • Once in the EWS, navigate to the Settings and check for any issues related to the IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) or print job settings. You may also want to check the Network settings and ensure there are no unauthorized devices or active print jobs.

3. Reset the Printer’s Network Settings

  • If the unwanted messages are related to a network communication issue, try resetting the printer's network settings.
    • On the printer’s control panel, go to Network Settings > Restore Network Defaults (this will disconnect the printer from the network).
    • Reconnect the printer to your network, either via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and reconfigure any necessary settings.

4. Firmware Update

  • Sometimes issues like this can be resolved by updating the printer’s firmware.
    • In the EWS (Printer’s Web Interface), go to Support > Firmware.
    • Check for any available firmware updates and follow the instructions to install them.

5. Disable Unwanted Protocols or Services

  • In the EWS, look for settings related to IPP, Bonjour, or any other network printing protocols.
  • Disable any protocols that you do not need. If IPP is not required for your setup, try disabling it.

6. Factory Reset

  • If none of the above steps work, you can perform a factory reset on the printer.
    • Navigate to Menu > Setup > Restore Defaults or check the printer's manual for specific instructions.
    • This will reset the printer to its original settings, and you will need to reconfigure network and printer settings afterward.

7. Check for Malware or Unwanted Network Access

  • If you suspect unauthorized access, ensure your router is secured, and no unauthorized devices are connected to your network.
  • You may want to run a security scan on your network or router to rule out any potential malware or breaches.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
