I have an HP Envy 5000  All-in-One printer series that is now out of warranty. Anytime I try to print regardless of the device and print method an error message that the cover door is opened always pops up. When I try to print the cover door opened error message will pop up when it is closed . Usually it will pop up, stop printing, start printing again, and this will continue until the whole document is printed. However, sometimes it won’t print at all. I have made sure the door is closed and the ink cartridges are the right place. I have tried looking up information to try and resolve this issue. Has this happened to anyone else?  Does anyone have ideas on how to fix this?  Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi @Print4educ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with HP ENVY 5000 All-in-One Printer series getting the "cover door open" error typically indicates a problem with the door sensor or a mechanical issue with the door latch. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue:

1. Check the Door Latch

  • Ensure Proper Closure: Make sure that the cover door is properly aligned and fully closed. Sometimes, a door may seem closed but isn’t perfectly aligned with the latch.
  • Inspect the Latch Mechanism: Look for any obstructions or debris that might be interfering with the latch or sensor.

2. Clean the Door and Latch Area

  • Dust and Debris: Dust or debris can sometimes affect the sensors. Gently clean around the door and the latch area with a soft, dry cloth.

3. Check the Sensor

  • Locate the Sensor: The sensor is usually located near the door latch. It might be a small optical sensor or a mechanical switch.
  • Inspect for Damage: Ensure the sensor isn’t damaged or misaligned. If it’s a mechanical switch, make sure it moves freely and isn’t stuck.

4. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Power Cycle: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for a few minutes before plugging it back in and turning it on again.

5. Update Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Check for Updates: Sometimes, firmware updates can fix bugs related to error messages. Check the HP support website for any available firmware updates for your model.

6. Check for Mechanical Issues

  • Open and Close the Door: Open and close the door several times to see if the issue persists. Sometimes, a slight adjustment can help with alignment.
  • Inspect the Hinges: Ensure that the hinges of the cover door are not loose or damaged.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
