HP DeskJet 2320 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I bought this DJ 2300 three years ago but never used it. Now I need it! I discarded the original cartridges as they were old. I have just bought new HP cartridges of the type (305) specified on the printer. But both ink alert lights flash and it will not print from the PC. However, by holding down the 'Power' and 'Cancel' buttons, the printer prints a perfect test page!

HP 'Printer Assistant' shows both cartridges are full of ink but the graphic shows little 'No Entry' icons.

HP 'Scan and Print Doctor' says I should check the cartridges, etc.

How do I convince the device that it is really healthy and can go ahead and print pages from my PC?

Thanks in advance for a solution....

....just in case it is relevant: I bought the printer in Greece and am now needing to use it in Germany. The cartridge type 305 must surely be the same in both EU countries....?

@Dad_Berlin, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to have your printer not recognize the new cartridges, especially when you need it urgently. Let's try a few troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue:

Make sure the cartridges are genuine HP 305 or 305XL cartridges.

Clean the Cartridges and Printer Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the cartridge access door and remove the cartridges.
  • Gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water. Allow them to dry completely before reinserting the cartridges.

Reset the Printer:

  • Unplug the printer from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the internal sensors and resolve recognition issues.

Reinstall the Cartridges:

  • Make sure the cartridges are properly seated in their slots. They should click into place securely.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve compatibility issues with new cartridges.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool again. Follow any additional troubleshooting steps it suggests.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Max3Aj, thanks for your message.

After rebooting PC & printer, HP Scan & Print Doctor now it gives me a useful message!

            "Use SETUP cartridges"

As I mentioned before, I didn't use the printer when I first bought it. In the interim I discarded the cartridges that came with the machine because I thought they would be too old. I didn't know there was something special about them! So I do not have the SETUP cartridges. Can you please guide me through the neccesary reset procedure?

Thanks in advance,

Tim

By the way, my responses to your other suggestions are:

- I had already cleaned the cartridge and printer contacts three times without improvement. Checked seating each time.

- AFAIK the cartridges are genuine HP 305, bought this last week from Amazon.

- Unplug / replugging made no difference

- the firmware update .exe halts at "update failed".

@Dad_Berlin, Thank you for your response.

Please try these steps,

  • To bypass the error, first install the ink cartridges by opening the front door of the printer.
  • Place the black ink cartridge, followed by the color cartridge, and then close the ink cartridge chamber door.
  • Notice that the printer screen displays error E0 with flashing lights.
  • To resolve this, open the front door again.
  • On the printer screen, press and hold the wireless button for three seconds, then release it.
  • Close the ink cartridge chamber door. After a few seconds, the error should disappear.
  • The printer will make some noise as it processes, and soon, there will be no more error lights blinking.
  • This means you have successfully bypassed the setup in cartridges and the printer is now ready for use.

I hope this helps!

The DJ 2300 that I have has no screen and no wireless button so your suggestion cannot work.

Fortunately, a neighbour with a similar printer had kept his 305 SETUP cartridges and they functioned well enough to unblock my printer. Now printing well!
