I have replaced my cartridges with genuine HP cartridges, but get a replace depleted cartridge message on rest, I have unplugged the printer waited for over 60 sec plugged it back in but no change, I have cleaned the contacts and reset the cartridges, no change, I have tried to clean the print head but of course the machine is not recognising the new cartridges so that is out, I have tried dealing with the chatbot, I really don't know why as that was a waste of time. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue

Hi @Knowprint,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand your printer keeps showing a “replace depleted cartridge” message even after installing genuine HP cartridges. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.
Reseat the cartridges firmly
– Remove each cartridge, check for missing tape or packaging, and reinstall until you hear a solid click.
– Make sure each cartridge sits fully in its slot with no looseness.
Clean the electrical contacts
– Gently wipe the gold/copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the carriage using a dry, lint-free cloth.
– Even slight oxidation or ink residue can prevent the printer from detecting new ink levels.
Perform a hard reset
– Power off the printer → unplug it for 60–90 seconds → plug back in and restart.
– This forces the printer to refresh its ink system and status.
Check if the printer is blocking refilled or previously used cartridges
– Some models remember older depleted cartridges and continue to show the message.
– Make sure the new cartridges are genuine HP and not previously installed or refilled.
Try installing the cartridges in a different order
– Insert the black cartridge first, then the colors one by one.
– This sometimes helps the detection sequence.
Update the printer firmware
– Use HP Smart or visit HP Support → enter your model → install the latest firmware.
– Firmware updates fix errors where new cartridges are flagged as depleted.
Check for stuck carriage or dirty sensor window
– Look inside the ink carriage area for dust or dried ink blocking the cartridge sensor.
– Clean gently with a dry cloth or compressed air.
I hope this helps.
