Welcome to the HP support community.

Remove and reinsert the ink cartridges

  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Open the door to access the ink cartridges.

  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

  4. Push the tab on an ink cartridge, and then pull the ink cartridge from its slot.

       CAUTION:

Do not leave the ink cartridges outside the printer longer than 30 minutes. Doing so can result in damage to both the printer and the ink cartridges.

Removing an ink cartridge from the printhead

  5. Reinsert the ink cartridge into its color-coded slot, and then press down on it until it snaps into place.

Inserting the ink cartridge into place

  6. Repeat these steps to remove and reinsert the remaining ink cartridges.

  7. Close the ink cartridge access door.

Thank you. However I have read and tried this standard HP solution and unplugging my machine whilst on. Neither work. What I need to be able to do is by pass the use start up cartridge error message. I have had the machine for a few years and changed cartridges many times before without a problem - clearly I no longer have the setup cartridges that the machine came with.

I am sending you a private message with the steps to bypass the setup cartridge. Please check the mailbox icon at the top-right corner of this screen.

I hope this helps resolve this issue completely.
