HP 7740 error messages will not clear.  Indicates the scanner has a document in it AND document jam in printer. I can not get the error messages to disappear despite unplugging the printer and restarting.  I can't do a factory reset because the messages will not clear from menu screen.

Hi @snglenn,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're encountering persistent error messages on your HP 7740 printer despite unplugging it and attempting to restart it, there are a few additional steps you can try to resolve the issue.

  • Inspect for Jammed Paper: Make sure to thoroughly check for any jammed paper both in the scanner area and the paper path. Even small shreds of paper can trigger error messages.
  • Clear Paper Path: Open up the printer and remove any stuck paper carefully. Use a flashlight if necessary to ensure all pieces are removed.
  • Reset the Printer: While the power is unplugged, press and hold the power button for at least 60 seconds. This can discharge any residual power and might reset the printer's internal mechanisms.
  • Check for Obstructions: Look for any foreign objects that might be obstructing the scanner or paper path. Sometimes debris or small objects can cause sensors to trigger error messages.
  • Check Scanner Mechanism: Ensure that the scanner mechanism is moving freely without obstruction. If there's any visible damage or obstruction, it might require servicing.
  • Firmware Update: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model. Sometimes firmware updates can resolve known issues and bugs.

Persistent error messages that aren't clear despite standard troubleshooting steps can be frustrating, but going through these additional measures should help you identify and resolve the issue with your HP 7740 printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
