Hi @J1975,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand your HP DeskJet 5102 is showing an E3 error even though there’s no visible paper jam. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.
1. Check the carriage movement
The E3 error often appears when the carriage cannot move freely.
Open the ink access door.
Make sure the carriage slides smoothly from left to right by gently nudging it.
Remove any tiny scraps of paper or dust stuck near the side rails.
2. Power reset the printer
This clears false jam errors.
With the printer ON, unplug the power cord from the back.
Wait 60 seconds.
Plug it back in and let it restart fully.
3. Inspect the paper path
Sometimes small debris triggers the jam sensor.
Remove all paper from the tray.
Check inside the input and output paths using a flashlight.
Look for loose torn bits, stickers, or curled paper that might not be obvious.
4. Reload the paper properly
Incorrect loading can also trigger E3 errors.
Fan the stack of paper to prevent sticking.
Load only 10–20 sheets.
Adjust the paper guides so they touch the stack without bending it.
5. Check the alignment of the paper tray
If the tray is loose or tilted:
Remove the paper tray and reinsert it firmly.
Make sure the guides are not squeezing the paper too tightly.
6. Clean the carriage path and rollers
Dust or ink buildup can slow movement.
Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
Clean the rollers in the input tray area.
Let everything dry for 2 minutes before printing.
I hope this helps.
