I'm currently running my printer in single-cartridge mode (I only need black for the foreseeable future) and I don't know if that factors in, but since taking out the color cartridge, the printer will no longer sleep despite being set to sleep after 5 minutes in the eco menu. Maybe not a big deal, but it lights up the room at night, being on all the time.

Hi @sonnykeyes,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
Running your HP ENVY 7640 E-All-In-One Printer in single-cartridge mode should not normally affect its ability to enter sleep mode. However, if the printer is not sleeping as expected, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
Step 1: Reset the Printer
- Turn off the Printer:
- Press the power button to turn off the printer.
- Unplug the Power Cord:
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait for 60 Seconds:
- Leave the printer unplugged for about a minute.
- Plug Back In and Turn On:
- Plug the power cord back into the printer and the wall outlet.
- Turn the printer back on.
Step 2: Check Firmware Updates
- Go to the HP Support Website:
- Visit the HP Support page and enter your printer model (HP ENVY 7640).
- Download and Install Firmware Updates:
- Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer.
- Download and install the update if available.
- If you do not find the firmware updates, either this printer is not compatible or drivers not available currently.
Step 3: Verify Sleep Mode Settings
- Access Printer Settings:
- On the printer control panel, navigate to the Setup menu.
- Select Preferences:
- Go to Preferences or Printer Maintenance.
- Check Sleep Mode:
- Ensure that the sleep mode is set to the desired time (e.g., 5 minutes).
- Reapply Settings:
- Reapply the sleep mode settings even if they appear correct.
Kindly find the next set of steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @sonnykeyes,
Please find the next set of steps below.
Step 4: Reinsert the Color Cartridge
- Reinsert the Color Cartridge:
- Temporarily reinsert the color cartridge to check if the printer resumes normal behavior.
- Test Sleep Mode:
- Monitor if the printer goes to sleep with both cartridges installed.
Step 5: Check for Obstructions
- Inspect the Printer:
- Ensure there are no obstructions (like paper or debris) inside the printer that might prevent it from sleeping.
If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it might be necessary to contact HP Support for further assistance. There could be a hardware or firmware issue.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
