@GPoppy1, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing a carriage error right out of the box with your HP ENVY Inspire 7900e. This issue typically occurs when the printer detects that the printhead carriage cannot move freely, often due to packaging materials, obstructions, or mechanical misalignment.

Here are some steps you can follow to resolve this:

Turn off the printer

  • Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.

Open the ink cartridge access door

  • Carefully open the cartridge access door and inspect the carriage area.

Remove any packing materials

  • Look for and remove:
    • Orange plastic clips
    • Protective cardboard or foam
    • Tape or film around the carriage or ink area

Even small leftover packaging can block the carriage movement.

Check for obstructions

  • Gently move the carriage left and right. It should slide freely.
  • If it’s stuck, do not force it. Look for any paper debris or foreign objects.

Reinstall ink cartridges

  • Remove and reinsert the cartridges to ensure they are seated properly.
  • Make sure you’re using genuine HP cartridges.

Reset the printer

  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Wait for the printer to initialize and check if the error persists.
