I have a HP OfficeJet 7740 all in one printer, occasionally it throws up an error during printing and completely stops responding with a power symbol on the screen, why is this happening?

Hi @Shel-0550

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m really sorry this error is interrupting your printing—it’s especially frustrating when the screen goes blank except for the power symbol, leaving you with no way to interact. Let’s bring your printer back to full responsiveness with a few clear, tactile steps.

The error code B8CE8D9C on your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 typically signals a firmware or internal communication fault that causes the printer to freeze with only the power icon showing. You can resolve this by performing a firmware reset and clearing any stalled jobs or corrupted data.

Step-by-step recovery for error B8CE8D9C

1. Perform a power reset

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the printer and wall outlet.
  • Wait 2 full minutes.
  • Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Power on the printer and wait for it to initialize fully.

2. Clear any stalled print jobs

  • On your PC, press Windows + R, type control printers, and press Enter.
  • Right-click your OfficeJet 7740 > See what's printing.
  • Cancel all jobs.
  • Restart your computer and printer.

3. Update the printer firmware

Outdated firmware can trigger internal faults during complex print operations.

  • Visit: HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Firmware Update
  • Select your OS (Windows 11) and download the latest Firmware under “Firmware” section.
  • Run the update tool with the printer powered on and connected via USB or network.

4. Run HP Diagnose & Fix tool

This tool checks for driver conflicts, spooler issues, and communication faults.

5. Optional: Restore factory defaults

If the issue persists:

  • On the printer’s touchscreen (once responsive), go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
  • This clears internal memory and resets all configurations.

Let me know if the printer remains frozen after the power reset or if the error reappears during specific print jobs—I’ll guide you through deeper recovery steps if needed.
