I have a HP Officejet pro 8610. it said the Magenta was out of ink so I bought a new one. Now it won't click in and it says "failed printhead".  I am a 78 yr old handicapped woman who does not understand what to do to fix it.

@HeidiMD, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 Printhead Issue!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you're having with your printer. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you resolve the "missing or failed printhead" issue on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610:

Check the Cartridge Installation:

  • Make sure the new magenta ink cartridge is inserted correctly. Sometimes it requires a firm push to hear a click that indicates it's properly seated.

Perform a Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for about one minute.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear errors in the printer's memory.

Clean the Contacts:

  • Carefully open the printer to access the printhead area.
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and where the cartridge slots in the printer.
  • Allow them to dry completely before reinserting the cartridge and closing the printer.

Try Another Cartridge:

  • If you have another magenta cartridge, try installing it. Sometimes a cartridge can be faulty or the printer may not recognize it.

Reinstall the Printhead:

  • Open the printer and remove all ink cartridges.
  • Lift the latch to remove the printhead.
  • Clean the printhead contacts as mentioned before.
  • Carefully reinstall the printhead and latch it securely, then replace the ink cartridges.

Printhead Replacement:

  • If none of the above steps work, you might need a new printhead.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
