envy 4520
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After trying time and time again to get my Envy 4520 Inkjet printer to stop printing jobs in black and white, I have had no success. Scouring through the internet to find troubleshooting methods have brought up most but likely not all potential issues, and if I can't find a reasonable solution here then I have almost no choice but to throw out a perfectly fine unit because the software doesn't want to listen anymore. The issue has been going on for a few months shortly after my last (63)XL colour cartridge change.

=> Nothing physical is damaged inside the unit because the calibration and information pages print out in full colour, and the ink cartridge is at roughly 9/10 capacity. Even though the printer is 3 years old, it is in like-new condition while churning out 50-75 pages a week like a champ.

=>   Uninstalling every last bit of software both through Windows 10 Add/Remove programs and at root level through the command prompt. Reinstalled appropriate drivers through HP's website and automatically after a factory reset on the unit.

=>Printing preferences across all softwares including Adobe Reader, MS Word, Google Chrome to print any given job, options in menus will be diligently checked to print in full colour (Explicitly NOT greyscale), fit to page, print in the best quality.

=> Windows Printer Advanced settings and properties all specifically combed to print a page in colour without any measures to decrease ink/toner output. Although to be safe I have also troubleshooted with saving ink and toner to no success.

=> The next logical option is to check out window's colour profiles which is the stock sRGB profile without HRD enabled that is optimized for an RTX 2070. This is the only ICC profile available.

As you can see I'm coming close to wit's end with this poor old printer that has absolutely nothing wrong with it and am willing to go all Office Space on it soon. Any suggestions on troubleshooting?

Offline Doctor V5.0.7

Use this version:

  http://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/patches/HPPSdr.exe

  • Download and Save the doctor to your computer
  • Open File Explorer > Navigate to the folder in which you saved the file (likely Downloads)
  • Execute the doctor – Answer any prompts /  let the process complete
  • Restart the computer, log in, and wait for the final steps in the Doctor to finish.
  • Check for any difference.

Connection Issues

  • Print and Scan Doctor Version 5.0.7 creates a secondary queue for printing with TCP/IP port.

After the Offline Doctor completes…

Verify / Adjust the “Default” printing device (Default Printer)

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer

Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Manage > Set as Default

OR

Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on printer > Set printer as Default

NOTES – Selecting Default Printer

  1. Do not select the printer marked as “Scan Only / DO NOT DELETE”
  2. Do not select the printer marked as “Fax”

Example Default Printer:  Set “Default” Printer = HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 series PCL-3 (Net)

Reference HP Printers - Printer is Offline (Windows) > Step 2: Manually set the default printer

What else?

Method - Create TCP IP port

** Install – Optional - Port Issues - Create a TCP/IP port **

TCP/IP can resolve odd connection, scanning, and installation problems.

Create / Switch to a TCP/IP Port to facilitate communication and prevent ‘offline’ issues

How-to “Create TCP Port” Contributed by  greenturtle:

  1. 1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
    2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, Right-Click the printer and Left-Click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
    3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
    4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:
Create & Use TCP IP port

Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port within the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)

Thank you for the additional troubleshooting steps, and I know somewhere down the line this will be helpful to someone else too. There were some changes to the settings when the older. 5.0.7 HPDoctor software which turned it's name in Windows to  SCAN-ONLY. With no explanation on how, it made the device invisible through Printers & Scanners through the control panel. Although through device manager there was a shortcut to the hidden directory which enabled me to check and uncheck all the options a few times. Just like magic I can print in colour again!
