I ran out of black ink two days ago - turned off printer and received ink today.  When I started printer back up I get an error code B89F986C.  Drivers are up to date. Unplugged and waited, turned everything off.  Rebooted and still same error.

Hi @pjhmah,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error code B89F986C on your HP printer typically indicates a problem related to the printhead or the ink system. Since you mentioned that you ran out of black ink and have now replaced it, the issue might be related to the ink system or printhead initialization process. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issue:

**1. Check Ink Cartridges

  • Reinstall Ink Cartridges: Remove and reinstall the black ink cartridge. Ensure that it is properly seated in the cartridge slot.
  • Check for Leaks or Damage: Inspect the ink cartridges for any signs of damage or leaks. If the cartridge is damaged, it may need to be replaced.

**2. Check Printhead

  • Remove and Reinstall Printhead: Turn off the printer, open the access door, and carefully remove the printhead. Then, reinstall it ensuring it is properly seated.
  • Clean Printhead Contacts: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and inside the printer. Avoid touching the nozzles directly.

**3. Check for Obstructions

  • Inspect Printer Internals: Look inside the printer for any obstructions or foreign objects that might be interfering with the printhead’s movement.

**4. Update Printer Firmware

  • Check for Firmware Updates: Visit the HP Support website and look for any available firmware updates for your printer model. Updating the firmware might resolve the error.

**5. Reset the Printer

  • Perform a Hard Reset: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Factory Reset (if applicable): Some printers have an option to perform a factory reset. Refer to the printer’s manual or HP’s support website for instructions on how to do this.

**6. Check for Software Conflicts

  • Reinstall Printer Software: Uninstall the current printer software from your computer and reinstall it. Ensure you are using the latest version from the HP website.
  • Check for Conflicting Software: Ensure no other software is interfering with the printer’s operation. Sometimes other printing software can cause conflicts.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
