I am seeing this error on my printer after getting the “jammed paper” message.  There isn’t any jammed paper and the rollers are clean.  We tried a hard reset but it comes back.  It was plugged into a surge protector, so we’ve tried plugging into the wall and nothing.  What else is there to do?

I can imagine how frustrating this is, especially when you’ve checked for jams, cleaned the rollers, and even tried a hard reset. The error 0x6200004a on HP printers usually points to an internal carriage or sensor issue, often triggered after a jam message, even when no paper is present.

Recommended Steps

1. Power Reset (Deep)

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait 2–3 minutes.
  • Plug directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
  • Turn the printer back on.


2. Check for Hidden Obstructions

  • Open the access door.
  • Remove the ink cartridges and inspect the carriage path.
  • Use a flashlight to check for: 
    • Tiny paper scraps near the carriage belt or sensor strip.
    • Dust or debris on the encoder strip (clear plastic strip behind the carriage).
  • Clean the strip gently with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.


3. Move the Carriage Manually

  • With the printer off, gently slide the carriage left and right.
  • If it feels stuck or uneven, there may be a mechanical obstruction.


4. Update Firmware

  • Go to Official HP® Support.
  • Enter your printer model.
  • Download and install the latest firmware update.


5. Perform a Semi-Full Reset

(This clears deeper errors but keeps Instant Ink settings)

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Press and hold Cancel + Wireless buttons.
  • While holding, turn the printer back on and keep holding for 20 seconds until all lights blink.
