I have just purchased a HP DeskJet 2820e and attempting to set it up. All the errors on the screen are flashing. What do I do? I have tried turning off and on.

Hi @JeffEmz

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for sharing what you’ve already tried—it’s understandable how frustrating it is to see flashing error lights right out of the box. When all lights are blinking on the HP DeskJet 2820e, it usually means the printer is stuck in an initialization fault or cartridge recognition loop.

Let’s walk through a focused set of steps to help bring it back to life.

1. Perform a Full Power Drain Reset

This clears any startup lock:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  • Disconnect all cables, including USB or Ethernet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds while unplugged.
  • Plug the printer back in and power it on.

2. Check Ink Cartridge Installation

Improper seating can trigger flashing lights:

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove both cartridges and inspect the copper contacts.
  • Gently clean the contacts with a dry lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert the black cartridge first, then the tri-color, pressing firmly until they click.
  • Close the door and wait for the printer to initialize.

3. Inspect for Protective Tape or Obstruction

Even a small piece of tape can block recognition:

  • Remove each cartridge and check the nozzle area.
  • Ensure the plastic tape covering the ink outlet is fully removed.
  • Look for any packaging debris or misaligned components.

4. Connect via HP App for Guided Setup

The app can help clear setup faults:

  • Download the HP App on your phone or computer.
  • Open the app and select Set Up a New Printer.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the printer and complete setup.

5. Check for Firmware Update

Outdated firmware can cause startup issues:

Let me know how the printer responds after these steps. If the lights continue flashing, I can help you isolate whether it’s a cartridge fault, setup lock, or deeper initialization issue.
