Hi @Gr8Smile69

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for reaching out, and I’m truly sorry you’re facing this issue. It’s frustrating when a simple cartridge replacement leads to an unexpected error—especially when you're following the instructions precisely.

Let’s walk through a few steps to help resolve this and get your printer back to normal.

1. Power Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Power on the printer and check if the error clears.

2. Re-seat the Cartridge

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove the black cartridge and inspect:
    • Copper contacts for smudges or ink residue
    • Plastic tabs for damage or misalignment
  • Clean the contacts gently with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Let it dry completely and reinstall the cartridge firmly.

3. Check Cartridge Authenticity

  • Ensure the cartridge is genuine HP and compatible with your printer model.
  • If it’s refilled or third-party, the printer may reject it.

4. Update Printer Firmware

5. Try a Different Cartridge

  • If possible, test with another black cartridge from a different batch.
  • Even new cartridges can be defective or improperly filled.

If the error remains after these steps, the issue may be due to:

  • A faulty cartridge sensor
  • A logic board error
  • A firmware lockout triggered by cartridge recognition failure
