HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a
Microsoft Windows 11

My usually very dependable HP Officejet Pro 8600 has an issue after I replaced the Magenta ink cartridge.  I replaced an empty cartridge with a new HP one and received an error message:  THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE PRINTER OR INK SYSTEM. TURN PRINTER OFF THEN ON. IF THE PROBLEM PERSISTS, CONTACT HP.  The cartridge tray is removable.  What should I attempt to do to fix it?

@StanleyP27, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're encountering the “There is a problem with the printer or ink system” error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 after replacing a cartridge, it typically indicates a communication issue with the new cartridge, an ink system blockage, or a temporary firmware glitch. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot the problem:

Power Cycle the Printer (Properly)

Performing a hard reset can help clear temporary memory glitches:

  1. Turn off the printer using the power button.
  2. Unplug the printer from the wall and from the back of the printer.
  3. Wait for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Plug it back in and turn it on.

Check the New Magenta Cartridge

Even new cartridges can sometimes be defective. Here’s what to do:

  1. Remove the magenta cartridge.
  2. Check for any protective tape that may have been missed during installation.
  3. Wipe the copper-colored contacts gently with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  4. Reinsert the cartridge securely.
  5. If available, try re-inserting the old cartridge (if it’s not completely dry) to see if the error disappears.

Clean the Printhead Contacts

Since the OfficeJet Pro 8600 has a removable printhead, you can clean it:

  1. Remove all cartridges.
  2. Lift the latch to pull out the printhead.
  3. Clean the gold contacts on both the printhead and inside the carriage using distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  4. Allow it to dry completely before reinserting.

Try a Semi-Reset (if the above fails)

This can help clear system-level ink errors:

  1. With the printer powered on, press the Back (↩️) button 4 times quickly.
  2. The Support Menu will appear.
  3. Select Reset Menu > Semi Full Reset.

⚠️ Note: This will reset settings and may require you to reconfigure Wi-Fi, paper size, etc., but it won’t delete firmware or ink levels.

Check for Ink Leakage or Clogs

If ink spilled during the cartridge replacement, it might cause an error:

  1. Shine a flashlight inside the ink area.
  2. If you see pooled ink or dried gunk, clean it carefully.
  3. Use only distilled water and lint-free cloths—never tap water.

Try Updating Firmware (if accessible)

If you can access the control panel and menus:

  1. Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer.
  2. Alternatively, update via the HP Smart app or HP Easy Start on your PC.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
