Hi @Linda405

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the situation—and I’m truly sorry your printer is showing the “printhead appears to be missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed” message.

I appreciate your patience and want to help you bring the printer back to working order.

Let’s walk through a focused recovery path to restore printhead detection.

Step-by-step recovery for printhead detection error

1. Perform a full power reset with cartridge removal

  • Turn off the printer
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet
  • Open the ink access door and remove all ink cartridges
  • Wait for 2 minutes
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on without cartridges
  • Wait until the printer displays a message about missing cartridges
  • Reinsert the cartridges one at a time, ensuring each clicks into place

2. Reseat the printhead (if accessible)

  • If your printer model allows access to the printhead:
    • Open the ink access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving
    • Gently lift the latch securing the printhead (if present)
    • Carefully lift and reseat the printhead into its slot
    • Lower the latch and close the access door
  • If the printhead is not user-accessible, skip to the next step

3. Clean the electrical contacts

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it
  • Open the ink access area
  • Using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water:
    • Gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the printhead
    • Then clean the corresponding contacts inside the carriage
  • Allow everything to dry for 5 minutes before reinserting the printhead and cartridges

4. Update printer firmware via USB

  • Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page
  • Enter your printer model (e.g., HP Envy 7200 series)
  • Download and install the latest firmware update utility
  • Connect the printer to your computer via USB
  • Run the updater and follow the on-screen instructions
  • Restart the printer after update completes

5. Restore factory defaults

  • On the printer touchscreen:
    • Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Settings > Restore Factory Defaults
    • Confirm and allow the printer to restart
  • This clears any persistent system-level errors

Let me know how the printer responds after these steps. If the error clears, we can proceed with alignment and print quality checks. You’ve done everything right by staying observant—I’ll be here to guide you further.
