Hi @izzabelly,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the error message you're encountering on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus indicating "There is a problem with printer or ink system" typically points to an issue with the ink cartridges, printhead, or internal components.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
  2. Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  3. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Step 2: Inspect and Clean the Ink Cartridges

  1. Open the ink cartridge access door and remove the ink cartridges one by one.
  2. Check for any obstructions, debris, or leaked ink on the cartridge contacts or printhead.
  3. Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printhead with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  4. Reinstall the ink cartridges securely, ensuring they snap into place correctly.

Step 3: Reset the Printhead

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord again.
  2. Open the cartridge access door.
  3. Lift the printhead latch and remove the printhead carefully.
  4. Inspect the printhead for ink build-up or debris, and gently clean the electrical contacts.
  5. Reinsert the printhead and lock the latch securely.
  6. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Step 4: Update Firmware (If Possible)

  1. Go to the HP Support website and download the latest firmware update for your printer.
  2. Install the update using the provided instructions.

Step 5: Perform a Printhead Cleaning (from Printer Menu)

  1. Go to the Printer Menu, select Tools or Maintenance, and choose Clean Printhead.
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts to clean the printhead and test print.

Step 6: Replace the Printhead (if necessary)

If the issue persists and the printhead appears damaged or unresponsive, you may need to replace the printhead.
