Hi @Ruthie42,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Smart Tank 7000 series printer is stuck showing an error message, and the control panel only responds to the power button. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Power Reset the Printer

Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from both the printer and wall outlet.

Wait at least 60 seconds, then reconnect and power on.

Check for Error Code or Message

Look closely at the display for any specific error code or wording.

This helps identify whether the issue is related to ink, paper, or hardware.

Inspect Ink Tank and Cartridges

Open the ink access area and confirm all cartridges are properly seated.

Make sure ink levels are sufficient and no protective tape remains on the cartridges.

Check Paper Path

Remove any paper from the input tray and output tray.

Inspect inside for jams or obstructions, even small scraps of paper.

Update Printer Firmware

If the printer can connect to Wi-Fi, check for firmware updates through the HP Smart app.

Updates can clear persistent error states.

Try a Different Startup Method

Disconnect the USB or network cable before powering on.

This ensures the printer starts without external communication errors.

I hope this helps.
