The printer error suggests a paper jam. There isn't one. It tells me to turn it off then on. I can't . the only way to shut it down is to unplug it then I get a message that it was improperly shut down.....I need it to PRINT.

Hi @JudiJAC,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error code 0x6100004a on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-In-One Printer typically indicates a mechanical issue, often related to the printhead or carriage movement. Since you've confirmed there's no paper jam, here are some steps to try and resolve the issue.

Hard Reset

  1. Turn Off the Printer: If the printer is on, unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait: Leave it unplugged for about 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect: Plug the printer back into the power source.
  4. Power On: Turn the printer back on and see if the error persists.

Check for Obstructions

  1. Open the Printer: Open the printer's access door to check for any obstructions or small pieces of paper that might be caught in the printhead path.
  2. Move the Carriage: Gently move the printhead carriage to the left and right to ensure it moves freely. Do not force it if it’s stuck.

Clean the Printhead and Carriage

  1. Power Off: Unplug the printer from the power source.
  2. Access the Printhead: Open the printer's access door.
  3. Clean: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the printhead and the surrounding area, ensuring there is no ink build-up or debris.

Reset the Printer

  1. Power Off: Unplug the printer.
  2. Wait: Leave it unplugged for at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reboot the System: While waiting, restart your computer.
  4. Reconnect and Power On: Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Update Firmware

  1. Go to HP Support: Visit the HP support website and check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model.
  2. Download and Install: Follow the instructions to download and install the latest firmware.

Printhead Reset

  1. Power Off: Unplug the printer.
  2. Remove Printhead: Open the printer and carefully remove the printhead.
  3. Clean Contacts: Clean the printhead contacts and the corresponding contacts in the printer using a soft, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
  4. Reinstall Printhead: Reinstall the printhead, ensuring it is seated properly.
  5. Reconnect and Power On: Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
