Hi, when printing from my macbook it says that there are expired certificates and cannot print (this has happened once before but I cannot remember how I fixed it). An error also comes up when trying to print from my phone.
I have followed the tips in previous threads on making a self created certificate. I’ve changed date and time, synced to computer, removed/readded printer and also made multiple certificates in hopes it would work but has not. I have also cold reset my printer which hasn’t fixed the issue either.
What can I do to fix this issue?

Hi @Racel,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
This issue happens when HP’s web services certificate expires or your macOS/iOS does not trust the printer’s secure connection. Thank you for letting me know about the steps you have tried. Follow these steps to resolve it:
Step 1: Restart Everything
1️. Restart the printer – Unplug it from power for 1 minute, then turn it back on.
2️. Restart your Mac & phone – A fresh reboot may refresh trusted certificates.
3️. Restart your router – If the printer is networked, this can clear connection issues.
Step 2: Update Printer Firmware (Important)
Outdated firmware can cause expired certificates.
1. Update via Printer Menu:
- On the printer's control panel, tap Setup (gear icon).
- Select Printer Updates → Check for Updates.
- Install any available updates and restart the printer.
2. Update via HP Smart App (Mac/iPhone):
- Open HP Smart → Click Printer Settings.
- Look for Firmware Update and install it.
Step 3: Reinstall the Printer on macOS
1️. Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
2️. Select your HP ENVY Inspire 7220e, then click Remove Printer (–).
3️. Click Add Printer (+) → Select HP ENVY Inspire 7220e.
4️. Choose Secure AirPrint as the driver, then click Add.
Step 4: Reset Printing System (if issue persists)
1️. Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
2️. Right-click anywhere in the printer list and choose Reset Printing System.
3️. Confirm the reset and re-add your printer as in Step 3.
Step 5: Fix Certificate Issues (Mac Terminal Method – Advanced)
If you still get a certificate error, you can manually trust the printer’s certificate:
1️. Find the certificate:
- Open Safari → Type the printer's IP address (from printer menu).
- You will see a "Your connection is not private" warning.
- Click Advanced → Proceed Anyway.
2️. Manually trust the certificate (macOS Terminal):
- Open Terminal and enter:
Shell:
sudo security add-trusted-cert -d -r trustRoot -k /Library/Keychains/System.keychain /path/to/certificate
- This will add the printer’s certificate to trusted sources.
Step 6: Final Step: Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If none of the above steps work, you can restore the printer to factory defaults:
1️. Open Setup on the printer.
2️. Go to Printer Maintenance → Restore Factory Defaults.
3️. Reconnect to Wi-Fi and set up the printer again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
