I am getting a Document Feeder Jam message on my HP Office Jet Pro 6978.  I opened cover and found no document.  I have tried unplugging and restarting the printer several times.  There is no document in the feeder.  How do I clear this message so that I can use the printer?

Hi @Lisadg1

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're getting a "Document Feeder Jam" message on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 but there's no document in the feeder, here are some steps you can take to resolve the issue:

1. Check for Obstructions

  • Inspect the Document Feeder: Open the document feeder cover and carefully check for any small pieces of paper, dust, or debris that might be causing the jam.
  • Check Inside the Printer: Also, check inside the printer to ensure there are no obstructions or pieces of paper stuck anywhere.

2. Clear Any Error Messages

  1. Power Off the Printer:
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait: Leave it unplugged for about 60 seconds.
  3. Plug It Back In: Plug it back in and turn it on. Check if the message has cleared.

3. Reset the Printer

  • Perform a Hard Reset:
    1. Disconnect the power cord from the printer while it is turned on.
    2. Wait for 60 seconds.
    3. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.

4. Run a Self-Test or Print a Configuration Page

  • Sometimes running a self-test can help reset the printer’s status:
    1. From the printer control panel, navigate to Setup (the gear icon).
    2. Go to Printer Maintenance and select Print Configuration Page or a similar option.

5. Update Printer Firmware

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer:
    1. Visit the HP support website.
    2. Search for your printer model and check for updates.

6. Check the Document Feeder Rollers

  • If you feel comfortable, check the rollers inside the document feeder:
    1. Clean them gently with a lint-free cloth dampened with water.
    2. Make sure they are free of dust and debris.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
