Hello,
My HP 8720 recently automatically upgraded the firmware, I believe, for my printer and now I'm having problems with my printer. How do I "downgrade" the firmware to the original firmware that I had when I purchased it? I've searched everywhere for an article how to do it and the only one I found was for a different model printer here:

@vici0549, Welcome to HP Support Community!
I did a little bit of research on downgrading the printer firmware. Unfortunately, we do not have an option to do so.
However, if you could let me know the issue that you're facing with the printer, I can try to help you with solutions.
Keep me posted.
Cheers 🙂

We can try performing a complete rest on your printer to resolve any issues. However, firmware downgrade would not be possible.
The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.
I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Forums profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link.
Let me know the outcome.
Cheers 🙂

Hi,
I am having same issue after firware upgrade on OfficeJet 8720. The error I receive is "Remove and reinstall the indicated cartridge (K), making sure it correctly installed." After cleaning the printhead and connections I contacted my local ink supplier. They indicated they were made aware of an issue yesterday by HP concerning this latest firmware upgrade. I reset the printer to factory default and left it unplugged completely overnight. Still no joy. Thoughts?

Welcome to the HP Support Community!
- HP recommends using HP genuine ink cartridges.
- If a firmware update(1910A) has occurred on the printer, unfortunately, we do not have an option to downgrade it to the previous version.
- Resetting the printer to its factory defaults will not help in this case.
For now, let us try these steps:
Step 1: Reset the printer
1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Step 2: Clean the ink cartridge contacts
-
Open the ink cartridge access door.
-
Wait until the carriage stops moving before you continue.
-
Remove an ink cartridge, clean the copper-colored contact, and then insert the ink cartridge into its slot.
-
Repeat these steps for the other ink cartridges.
-
Make sure no ink cartridge is sticking out farther than the other ink cartridges.
-
Close the ink cartridge access door.
Step 3: Replace the problem ink cartridge
If you have a defective cartridge or printhead, it might be under warranty. To check the warranty on your ink or toner supplies, go to Printer and Page Yield Overview, and then review the limited warranty information for your supplies.
Refer to this document for more info.
Let me know how this goes.

Hi there!
I spoke to my ink supplier again on Friday. Don't waste your time trying to reset to factory default. It will not work and unsure why HP continues to offer this as a solution. They are aware of the issue. Seems new ink cartridges with a different chip will have to be distributed to make the error go away. Not sure why HP doesn't allow the rollback of firmware either. I essentially have a bricked printer until I receive new ink cartridge with new chip. Ink supplier said sometime this week with no guarantee as to arrival.
