On replacing empty ink cartridges an error message appeared requesting insertion of the ink cartridges which came with the printer. I understand that a partial reset was attempted by the owner via the control panel but this seems to have resulted in blocking of the control panel functionality. On switching on the printer I see the date and time setup screens, then the duplex set up screen, then the install cartridges screen with the 'insert original cartridges that came with this printer' error message from which i can progress no further. i cannot get back to the home screen on the control panel but can only step back through the stages above. I've tried the hard reset by unplugging the power cable several times but this makes no difference. I presume I therefore need to take the printer back to factory settings. Please advise how I may do this without full access to control panel functionality.

Many thanks

@AHW63, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

To bypass the use of setup ink cartridges, we have to perform an OOBE reset on the printer.

  • The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may corrupt the device.
  • I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

Many thanks for the response.  Unfortunately I am unable to access the reset menu using the BL button from the home screen (I had tried this previously) Pressing this button as directed does no take me to the support menu. The display panel merely allows me to proceed as per the steps previously mentioned. Is there any alternative way to force a reset? Many thanks

That's unfortunate. If the issue persists, please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

If the printer is out of warranty, I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

None of the suggested resets worked to cure this issue, here's what did eventually resolve it!

Prop to https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/2458942 (BitbyBit) for this lead, very much tried in hope more than expectation after much frustration going the 'conventional' route as the printer was having none of it!

  • With the printer on, open the printer cartridge service door and wait till the cartridge carriage stops on the left.
  • Remove the full carriage, with cartridges in place.
  • Unplug the power supply to the printer.
  • Put the carriage back and clip in.
  • Gently slide the printer carriage and mechanism to the far right with your hand as far as it will go. i.e. all the way to the RHS dock.
  • Close the printer service door.
  • Plug the printer power supply back in
  • Switch on if necessary
  • The error message should be gone, control panel should now be fully functional and unlocked and the set up process may now resume as normal with the user following the guidance steps displayed on the control panel.
