Hi @Kimboko

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP 4502 printer is showing the message "The following cartridge must be replaced" despite having a genuine HP 301 black cartridge inserted, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Check Cartridge Installation

  • Remove and Reinsert: Open the printer, remove the black cartridge, and carefully inspect it. Reinsert it, making sure it clicks into place securely.
  • Check for Tape: Ensure that any protective tape or plastic covering the cartridge contacts has been removed.

2. Clean the Contacts

  • Cartridge Contacts: Use a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water to clean the copper contacts on the cartridge.
  • Printer Contacts: Also, clean the contacts inside the printer where the cartridge connects.

3. Check for Cartridge Compatibility

  • Ensure that the cartridge is compatible with your printer model. The HP 301 cartridges should be compatible, but double-check if you have the right type (black vs. color).

4. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

5. Update Printer Firmware

  • Check for any available firmware updates for your printer on the HP website. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve compatibility issues.

6. Run Printer Diagnostics

  • Use the HP Smart app or the printer’s control panel to run any available diagnostic tests to check for issues with the cartridges.

7. Replace the Cartridge

  • If the problem persists, consider replacing the cartridge with a new genuine HP 301 cartridge, as the current one may be defective.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
