Hi @Curt1423,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for explaining the issue clearly. If your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 shows errors or says “printer is blocked” even when connected via USB, here’s what HP recommends:
Why This Happens
- The printer may be in an error state due to a firmware or driver issue.
- The HP Smart app or Windows print spooler may be stuck.
- Network or USB communication failure can trigger “blocked” messages.
Fixes
1. Restart Printer and Devices
- Power off the printer.
- Unplug for 60 seconds, then restart.
- Restart your computer or phone.
2. Check Printer Display
- Look for any error codes (paper jam, cartridge issue, etc.).
- Resolve those first before printing.
3. Update Printer Firmware
- Go to HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer series | HP® Support.
- Enter OfficeJet Pro 7740 and install the latest firmware.
4. Reset Print Spooler (Windows)
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc.
- Find Print Spooler, right-click → Restart.
5. Reinstall HP App
- Remove the printer from HP Smart.
- Download the latest HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site.
- Add the printer again.
6. For Mobile Printing
- Ensure your phone and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Update HP Smart on your phone.
- If still blocked, try printing via AirPrint (iOS) or Default Print Service (Android).
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
