Hi,

Somebody recently gave me an old 5500dn laser jet.

It’s in excellent condition, but I’m unable to do anything with it: the control panel buttons are not working so I can’t access the setups, print test sheet to get info, etc.

I tried the quick reset hole with no luck.

Did I miss something? Any idea?

Many thx!

If control panel buttons do not work, control panel may be defective.  Does control panel boot up correctly?  Power off printer.  Remove the formatter assembly.  Formatter is part where network cable plugs into.  Two screws and slides out.  Reset any memory Dimms.  Reinstall formatter and test  Not sure what the "quick reset hole" is.  Sounds like the hole for the engine test.

Hi,

Many thx for your help!

I did what you said, with no luck :o(

There is three Dimms installed. Correct?

I also tried the Cold reset, but it needs to use the buttons to perform it, and the buttons are not working (same for NVRAM init and HD init).

The only message appearing on the screen is ”Order supplies. For menus, press (check sign)”.

And yes, what I called ”quick reset hole” is the engine test printing. And it doesn’t work.

Some supplies are almost empty. Should replacing them fix the problem?

Thx again.

If supplies are low but not exhausted, you should still get a printout when performing an engine test if the base electronics of the printer are good. To test this, power off the printer and remove the formatter again. Make sure that  you have letter sized paper loaded in tray 2. Power on the printer and wait for a minute or two. Then press and hold the engine button in. If you get a print out of lines that would indicate that the base engine works. Then try the same test with the formatter installed. If the engine test does not work then likely you have a formatter issue. In terms of DIMMs, different models will have different numbers of DIMM modules installed. You can always remove them all except one and see if it at least starts up. If it does not work with one, try one of the other 2 just to eliminate a bad memory stick.,

On the memory sticks, one of them will be the printer's firmware Dimm.  Usually in the first slot.  RAM memory will be in the other slots.  When you connect network cable to printer, does the formatter network lights come on?  Should light up at network connector. Try to connect printer via USB cable.  See if USB connection works.  I would not buy any supplies until you establish print capability.  My guess, if control panel displays correctly through the boot up and comes to Ready, then the button problem is probably a failed control panel.  Unfortunately, parts will be required to prove this.  Good luck.

Hi NC77,

Thx again for your help, truly appreciated 🙏

The engine test didn't print, with formatter or not.

I noticed the green led ”ready” in lit and the cancel button worked when I got an error message.

I connected the printer to an hold computer with Ethernet (printer doesn't have USB). I checked  the network using ”Localhost:631/printers” (I'm on Mac) in a browser. And I got this error message (translated from french):

Processing ”irreversible problem: impossible to connect with the printer, new try in 30 seconds"

”Irrevesible” I guess we're done, huh?

So, many many thx again for your effort.

Regards
