My HP 7602r keeps saying printhead error. I have cleaned it with distilled water, unplugged...even did a factory reset. I have not been able to clean the printhead from the printer as it doesn't do anything. When trying to print or copy it idles for the longest time and still doesn't do anything. This was one of the free printer promotion receives and I am wondering if these promotions were free due to faulty of this printer as I have noticed several other complaints within months of receiving addressing the same issue.

@MsLatiece, Hi there, and welcome to HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out with your concern. I'm glad to assist you today.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your HP Smart Tank 7602r shows a printhead error and stops printing, especially within a short time of use. Let’s walk through the steps to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.

Identify the Problematic Printhead

  • On touchscreen models, the printer will display a message like “Printhead Problem”.
  • On non-touchscreen models, look for blinking Attention light and Printhead icons:
    • Left icon blinking = Tri-color printhead issue
    • Right icon blinking = Black printhead issue
    • Both blinking = Both printheads affected

Check Printhead Installation

  • Ensure ink tanks are at least half full and paper is loaded.
  • Open the ink access door and wait for the carriage to stop.
  • Press the blue button on the carriage to open the printhead cover.
  • Gently press down and remove the problematic printhead.

Important: Hold the printhead upright by its sides. Do not touch the copper contacts or ink nozzles.

Inspect and Reinstall the Printhead

  • Make sure:
    • The plugs on top of the printhead are removed.
    • The protective tape on the contacts is removed.
  • Reinsert the printhead at a slight upward angle until it clicks into place.
  • Close the printhead cover and ink access door.

Align the Printheads

Optional: Clean the Printhead (If Needed)

If the error persists, you may try cleaning the printhead manually using distilled water and lint-free cloth, but only if you're comfortable doing so. HP does not officially recommend deep manual cleaning unless guided by support.

Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the wall for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power it on.
  • Try printing again.
