HP 8139e printer only a few months old. Use it nearly every day. Last two days it has been cutting off the top and right sides of print... much of the bottom of the paper is empty and even the top of the paper is couple inches blank.
I tried to find some maintenance things to do (like I used to do with my prior HP Printers ... HP Smart had my type in the PIN for my printer ... then it started NO PRINT TOOLS. So that is not working either (It should have alignment etc right?)
This is happening printing PDFs
I tried printing at 99% ... at printable area ... at page area
It never prints anything the bottom 3-4 inches of the paper
It looks like it is trying to print the page at 125%, but starting way too high up in it's calculations- so it is NOT printing anything at the top of page either (even though it seems like it thinks something should be printed there)
I tried unplugging from the power outlet for over a minute - did not help.
I rebooted my Chromebook - did not help

@TehcnoHeaven, I see you were interacting with @Kuroi_Kenshi however, he's away for now and I'd love to help you out!
Thanks for sharing those clear screenshots – that really helps paint the full picture!
From what you’ve shown and described, it looks like your HP 8139e is struggling with how it interprets certain PDF layouts—especially those with non-standard aspect ratios (like square-ish formats). The issue seems to stem from how the print scaling is being handled by the PDF viewer or Chrome OS itself, rather than the printer hardware.
Let’s try some steps that can smooth out those rough edges:
Try Printing as Image (Always Works!)
You already noticed it—when you print the file as an image, everything fits and nothing gets chopped. This method forces the system to treat the PDF like a picture, avoiding any confusion about page dimensions or margin math.
✅ In the Print menu, go to "More Settings" > "Options", and check "Print as image".
Adjust Scale Carefully
Use “Fit to Printable Area” instead of “Fit to Page”.
Or set custom scale to 95% or 97%, especially if you're noticing edges getting trimmed even with correct settings.
Margins and Paper Size
Make sure Paper Size = Letter (8.5x11) and Margins = Default or No Border.
In some PDF viewers, unchecking “Choose paper source by PDF page size” can prevent weird cropping.
Update Everything
HP Smart app: Ensure it’s fully updated.
Firmware: From the HP Smart app, go to your printer > Settings > Advanced > Update Firmware.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi @TehcnoHeaven,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP 8139 cutting off the top and right sides!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
Print Alignment Issues
Check Print Settings:
- Ensure that the paper size and type settings match the paper loaded in the printer.
- Go to the print dialog before printing and verify that the margins and layout settings are correct.
Printer Alignment:
- It's possible that the printer's alignment is off. Here's how to perform a print alignment:
- Open the HP Smart app.
- Go to Printer Settings or Printer Maintenance.
- Look for options such as "Align Printheads" or "Printer Alignment" and follow the on-screen instructions.
Clean Printheads:
- Clean the printheads to ensure there are no obstructions affecting print quality.
- In HP Smart, navigate to Printer Maintenance.
- Select "Clean Printheads" and follow the instructions.
Accessing Printer Tools in HP Smart
Reconnecting Printer:
- Disconnect and reconnect your printer via the HP Smart app:
- Remove the printer from the app.
- Re-add the printer, ensuring it connects properly and that all functions are accessible.
Updating HP Smart and Printer Firmware:

Problem persists ... for some PDFs but not all PDFs
I have two rulebooks from the same company. One 23 page rulebook printed fine.
Then I did an alignment successfully.
The next rulebook was 4 pages and appeared to be from a manual that was more of a square shape ...
Here is the screen ready to click print from my chromebook
ready to print - it cut off the top and right sides
Here is what the first page looks like when printed:
cutoff top and right sides when printed
You can see how there is a large unprinted area at the top and bottom

Odd.
for the 4 page PDF rulebook that always has it's top and right sides cutoff (tried various settings) ....
IF... IF I choose to PRINT it to Google Drive as an IMAGE file... that image file is also a PDF ... but that image file PDF file prints just fine.
Rulebook PDF file is in the company's Dropbox here:
