HP 8610 - ink cartridge - reboot - will not accept new ink cartridges keeps asking for original

This printer is basically new I used it scan and never set up with ink - I now have tried to set up to print. I do not have the original ink cartridges and it keeps asking for them. i using compatible ink cartridges. It seems there is no way around this set - so how do you use the printer?

Is it asking for the original setup cartridges?

if you no longer have the setup cartridges it is possibly to bypass that requirement.  This only applies to setup cartridges

Is it complaining that the ink is not genuine HP?

If you have the 8610e version it uses instant ink but you can cancel the contract and use genuine HP cartridges.

Specifications 8610e are here

General help on instant ink management

I do not have an instant ink printer. My understanding is that if you run out of ink you can use genuine Hewlett Packard cartridges either original or refilled. They must have an HP chip in the cartridge.
