Microsoft Windows 11

My HP 8715 printer stopped printing and have me a cartridge depleted error. I replaced all the ink cartridges with new HP ones for a cost of almost $200. The problem still persists.

Hi @fcgiii,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand you’ve replaced all cartridges with new genuine HP ink, and your OfficeJet Pro 8715 still displays a "Cartridge Depleted" message. Below are the steps to resolve this issue.

Step 1: Power Reset the Printer

  1. With the printer on, disconnect the power cord from the rear.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug it back into the wall outlet directly (no surge protector).
  5. Reconnect it to the printer and power it back on.

This resets internal memory and may clear cartridge state issues.

Step 2: Remove and Reseat All Cartridges

  1. Open the ink cartridge access door.
  2. Remove all cartridges, even if new.
  3. Check for:
    • Protective tape left on cartridge contacts (common cause)
    • Dirty or damaged gold contacts
  4. Reinsert each cartridge one by one, firmly snapping it into place.

Step 3: Check for Firmware Updates (IMPORTANT)

Sometimes, HP firmware updates adjust how cartridges are validated:

  1. On the printer's touchscreen, tap Setup (gear icon) > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer > Check for Updates Now.
  2. If prompted, allow it to install.

Step 4: Run the Printer’s Internal Diagnostics

  1. From the touchscreen, go to Setup > Reports > Print Quality Report.
  2. If it doesn’t print, see if you can run the "Clean Printhead" utility under Printer Maintenance.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
