HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw

touchscreen has gone black.

I've read other forums and plugged in and turn on printer and disconnect cable and press power off button for 15 seconds. Reconnect cable, printer automatically turns back on.

Result - printer power light comes on, i hear the engine running and the touch panel is still blank.

Second option - open and close the front panel four times so the print engine prints a page.

Result - Printer prints a test page of coloured lines, no text. Touch panel is still blank.

Network test - I connected an ethernet cable to my router.

Result - no lights coming on receiving data.

Any ideas?  Printer is four years old and at this price point I was expecting it to last much longer.

Hi @ssobrien

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw is powering on and printing test pages, but the touchscreen remains blank. Since you've already tried multiple resets, here are a few additional troubleshooting steps:

1. Check for Backlight Issues

  • Shine a flashlight directly at the screen—sometimes the backlight fails, making the display appear off when it’s actually showing faint content.
  • If you see a dim image, the issue is likely with the backlight rather than the entire panel.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  • Wait at least 1 minute.
  • Plug it back in directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Turn the printer back on and check if the touchscreen responds.

3. Test Network Connectivity

  • Since the Ethernet connection isn’t showing activity, try accessing the Embedded Web Server (EWS):
    • Connect your computer to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct signal.
    • Open a browser and go to 192.168.223.1.
    • If the EWS loads, the printer is still functioning internally, but the screen may be faulty.

If none of these steps work, HP support may need to confirm whether this is a hardware failure. Let me know if you need help navigating their support options!

Thanks HawkEye for the reply.  Steps 1 and 2 didn't work.

On option 3, when I try to connect via WiFI Direct it asks me for a PIN.  where do I find this?  I don't see it anywhere on the printer

@ssobrien, Thanks for getting back to us!

@Hawks_Eye is away at the moment! I will be happy to help you further.

Since the screen is still blank and you're being asked for a Wi-Fi Direct PIN, you're right that this can be tricky without the display. Here are a few ways you can work around it:

Option 1: Connect Without a PIN Using WPS

If you're trying to get the printer onto your home Wi-Fi just to access the Embedded Web Server:

  • Press and hold the Wi-Fi Direct button on the printer for 3–5 seconds until it begins blinking.
  • Within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on your router.
  • This should securely connect the printer without needing to enter a PIN.

Option 2: Use USB to Access the Printer's Embedded Web Server

If you have a Windows PC:

  • Connect the printer to your computer via USB.
  • Wait for the system to install drivers automatically (or install them manually from HP support page).
  • Once installed, open your browser and type: http://127.0.0.1:8080 or look in your printer settings for the assigned local IP.
  • If successful, this should give you access to the printer’s internal settings via the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Option 3: Try HP Smart App

  • Download the HP Smart app on your phone or PC.
  • Open the app and tap Add Printer.
  • It should automatically detect the printer via Wi-Fi Direct or USB.
  • If it asks for a PIN, the app may show it directly or allow you to skip it depending on the model.

If none of these options work, unfortunately the touchscreen may have a hardware failure, which limits most setup and configuration options. In that case, we’d recommend visiting the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
Kindly follow this link to locate the nearest HP service center: HP® Service Center Locator - United States | HP® Support
(Select the country from the dropdown menu and enter the city name or pincode)

I hope this helps!

Hello, I tried options 2 and 3 below with no luck.  The printer is showing as offline in the HP Smart app and I don't see the assigned IP.

The nearest repair facility is 75 miles from my house which is not feasible.

I assume this printer is now headed for the dump.  4 years is a painfully short useful life for a printer that costs this much.
