Hi,

I am installing a HP Deskjet 2710e for a relative on a WIndows laptop. I have downloaded the HP Smart app from the Windows Store as directed and set the printer up (wirelessly) as per the instructions. As far as I know, everything installed fine but the printer won't print in black ink, either not printing in black at all or have very slight black markings on the page.

However, printing the same document from a mobile phone, also set up using the HP Smart app, will print the document complete with perfect black printing. just fine.

I've tried reinstalling the windows app, drivers from your website and I've upgraded the firmware to the latest version, all to no avail.

In summary, documents from a mobile phone = absolutely fine, documents from Windows laptop = no black ink.

Windows 11 23h2, app downloaded from windows store.

Please help!

Hi @Gavindrewsmith

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like your HP DeskJet 2710e is printing fine from your mobile phone, but it's having issues printing black ink when connected to your Windows 11 laptop. This could be due to a few different issues, including driver settings, software conflicts, or even print settings within Windows. Let's troubleshoot the issue step by step:

1. Check Printer Settings in Windows

Sometimes, the issue can be due to incorrect print settings in Windows. Let’s ensure that the printer is set to use black ink and not something like grayscale or a non-black ink color.

  1. Open Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Find your HP DeskJet 2710e in the list and click on it.
  3. Click Manage, then select Printing Preferences.
  4. In the Printing Preferences window, make sure that the print settings are not set to Grayscale or Color if you want to use black ink.
    • If the option to Print in Grayscale is checked, uncheck it.
  5. Additionally, check if the printer is set to use black ink only.

2. Check for Ink Cartridge Issues

Even if the black ink prints from your mobile phone, it’s still possible there’s an issue with the ink cartridge or the way the laptop is interacting with it. Check the following:

  • Check Ink Levels: Make sure that your black ink cartridge has ink. You can check ink levels either in the HP Smart app or the printer’s Control Panel (if available).
  • Re-seat the Ink Cartridge: Sometimes, ink cartridges might not be seated properly, even if everything seems fine. Remove the black ink cartridge, then reinsert it to make sure it’s seated correctly.

3. Update Printer Drivers Again (and HP Smart)

You've already reinstalled the printer drivers and updated the firmware, but it might help to double-check if the HP Smart app and any printer drivers on your laptop are up-to-date:

  1. Go to Device Manager > Printers.
  2. Right-click your HP DeskJet 2710e printer and select Update Driver.
  3. You can also go to the HP Support website to download and install the latest Windows 11 drivers manually.
  4. Additionally, make sure that your HP Smart app is updated to the latest version through the Microsoft Store.

4. Check Print Spooler and Restart the Service

Sometimes, issues with the Print Spooler can cause printing problems. You can try restarting the Print Spooler service:

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Print Spooler in the list of services.
  3. Right-click on it and select Restart.
  4. Try printing again to see if that resolves the issue.

5. Run the Printer Troubleshooter

Windows has a built-in troubleshooter that can often resolve common printing issues.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Run the Printer troubleshooter and follow the on-screen instructions.

6. Check the Print Job's Quality Settings

Sometimes the issue could be related to the print job settings itself:

  1. When you go to print from Windows, click on Printer Properties in the print dialog.
  2. Check the print quality settings. If it's set to draft or low quality, change it to normal or high quality and test the print again

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi,

thanks for the reply. I'm heading over to my relatives later today so I'll try these actions out and get back to you.

Hi,

no change having tried all the suggestions in the previous post. Printing from a mobile phone is 100% OK but from a laptop, it will not print black ink (at best there is a light outline of black print here and there). I even connected my own laptop to the printer and it was the same - this is significant because I have the same printer at home (2710e) and can print fine on my home one.

All out of ideas...
