Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have recently acquired an old HP Deskjet F4580 printer. It is successfully set up and linked to the network. The problem is that the printheads will not align correctly - black and colour are offset by around 0.5mm. I have repeatedly tried the align cartridge routine (print alignment page and scan) but nothing changes. I only want to use the printer as a quick alternative to my main non-wireless printer - I'm not expecting perfection but at the moment it is really not useable.

I know that this same question was asked a few years ago but I do not see any definitive answers. Any ideas would be most welcome.

Hi @Gwyndy,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

For the alignment issue on your HP Deskjet F4580, here are some troubleshooting steps that might help, given that you've already attempted the standard alignment process multiple times.

Clean the Cartridges: Sometimes, cleaning the cartridges can help improve alignment if there’s any debris or ink buildup causing issues.

  • Access the HP Toolbox or Printer Assistant (if available on your PC) to perform a cartridge cleaning. If not, you can manually clean the cartridges by removing them and using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the nozzles. Let them dry completely before reinserting.

Check Cartridge Compatibility: Verify that the cartridges installed are compatible with the Deskjet F4580 and that they are not nearing the end of their life. Older or low-ink cartridges can sometimes cause misalignment.

Print Quality Settings: Adjust the print quality in your printer settings.

  • Go to the Print dialog box, select Properties or Preferences, and adjust the Print Quality to a different setting (like Draft or Best) to see if it changes the alignment.

Firmware Update: If available, try updating the printer firmware. HP occasionally releases updates that can resolve performance issues, including alignment problems. Check HP’s support site for any updates for the Deskjet F4580.

Use Different Paper: The alignment process may be more accurate with high-quality inkjet paper rather than regular paper. Try the alignment process again using a fresh, good-quality paper.

Reset the Printer: Perform a hard reset by unplugging the printer from power while it’s on. Wait about 60 seconds before plugging it back in, and then try aligning again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Alden4 - Thank you for your response. I have tried all the steps outlined in your message as I had seen these on older posts about the same topic. Nothing has resolved the issue. I think that I just have to accept that this is a very elderly printer that has probably served its day! (It didn't cost me anything apart from a set of cartridges.)
