Has a fix been found for this annoying issue of the printer going "offline" constantly?  Yes, I've read the manual and done all the things.  Even rebooted both computer and printer.  Sometimes it works, and sometimes not.  Its totally random.  And has been happening more and more often over the last few weeks.

The short answer

No - To date, there is no magic to keeping a device connected to your network.

The magic is perhaps just around the corner with smarter AI, smarter networks, and smarter printers.

Printers are susceptible to a host of issues that can result in connection problems.

For example

  • Network changes - that is, the router controlling the network is jumping frequencies to maintain service to the full range of devices connected to your network.  Printers dislike this and might not stay connected.
  • Router configurations that limit how devices are allowed to connect to the network.  Full router configuration can be easy or difficult.  The task might depend on your skill level as much as the router.
  • DHCP (router side) that allows devices to jump from one IP address to another.  Printers dislike this.
  • Fluctuating levels of service provided by Wi-Fi.  Printers do not like it when Wi-Fi becomes too busy and service levels drop.  This printer can support 1-3 users at a time.
  • A poorly placed, wrongly configured, weak, outdated router.  "Old router" is a common network affliction.
  • Connection type (on the computer side -- Consider changing the connection type to TCP/IP.

For others reading -

"Done all the things"

The following does not pretend to gainsay what you have tried.

=============================================

Common fixes that can reduce instances of "Offline" might include one or more of the following.

  • The printer supports 2.4GHz or 5GHz but not at the same time.
    Connectivity, Std1 Hi-Speed USB 2.0 (client); 1 Wi-Fi 802.11ac (dual band)

  • When possible, separate SSID named networks by frequency.  Connect the printer to the SSID named network running on the frequency you want to the printer to use.  If there are problems, set the printer to use the SSID named network for 2.4GHz.

  • SSID_Dual_Band_Example_Router_2SSID_Dual_Band_Example_Router_2

         In general,

  • 2.4GHz is less fussy about obstacles and supports a longer distance (separation) between router and device (printer)
  • 5GHz is faster

  • Reduce the load -- limit the number of simultaneous connections to the printer to what it can handle.
Target Number of Users and Print VolumeFor teams up to 3 users; Prints up to 100 pages/month
Number of Simultaneous Users (local + network)1-3 Users
    Number of Users (facet)1-3 Users

  • If the printer is falling off the network during scan or print jobs, break up the jobs into smaller sections.  Why?  Printer has limited memory.  Job completion is also dependent the available resources on the destination (computer, tablet, phone).  If a job fails and pulls the printer off the network, the printer might not find its way back.
    Standard Memory256 MB DDR3

  • Assign a manual / static IP address to the printer and to the other devices on the network.

EWS NOTE >> If prompted for a password, enter the PIN from the label on your printer. It might be near the cartridge access area inside the printer or on the back, side, or bottom of the printer.

Example – EWS Setup – IPv4

EWS > HP Document / How-to (original format)

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Find printer IP address

Section Open the EWS over a local network orientation

Ethernet

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Network > Wired (802.3) > IPv4 Configuration

Wireless

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Network > Wireless (802.11) > IPv4 Configuration

As Available:

Tab Network > Wireless (802.11) > Advanced

Network Interface on / off, Network SSID name, Security Settings, Passphrase / Password

Select and connect to the correct SSID / network name for the bandwidth you are using.

Note:   It is not mandatory that you use a manual / static IP address.  Doing so can improve stability.
