Keep getting a flashing E4 error.  There is no paper jam and no paper in the printer.  I have reset device several times and keep getting the same flashing message.

Hi @MREJROTC,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP ENVY Pro 6458 is showing a flashing E4 error even though there’s no paper in the printer and you’ve already tried resetting it. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check for hidden paper or debris
– Open all access doors, trays, and the rear cover.
– Even a tiny piece of paper or dust can trigger the E4 error.

Inspect the paper feed mechanism
– Look for misaligned rollers or anything blocking the paper path.
– Spin the rollers gently to ensure they move freely.

Remove and reinsert the cartridges
– Turn off the printer and remove all ink cartridges.
– Reinstall them firmly until they click into place, then power on the printer.

Reset the printer hardware
– Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
– This can clear persistent error states.

Check for firmware updates
– Use HP Smart or visit HP Support → Download latest firmware.
– Updating firmware can resolve false paper/jam errors.

Perform a printer factory reset
– Control Panel → Settings → Printer Maintenance → Restore Factory Defaults.
– After reset, recheck if the E4 error persists before loading paper.

Inspect the printer sensors
– If the error continues, a paper-detection sensor may be stuck or malfunctioning.
– Clean the sensors gently with a dry, lint-free cloth or compressed air.

I hope this helps.
