Hi guys

I've had my beloved HP Envy 4500 printer for about 11 years.  Recently stopped working.  Keep getting the error message advising 'Update is in progress.  This make take several minutes.  You can check HP Instant Ink Status from the home menus'.

Its been like this for days and when I try to print I get the message 'Cannot print.  Press OK to connect printer to update status'.  Then you click on connect it cancels the job and shows the above message.

I have tried to restore factory settings, switch it on and off, reset the Wifi.

Also on the HP smart app its saying the printer is disconnected, but the printer is telling me it is connected to wifi.

Do you think its time to just get another printer? Could it be the printer is simply to old to receive the update?

@Harry84UK, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Power Reset

Turn the printer ON.

Disconnect the power cable from the rear of the printer (leave it ON).

Unplug the cable from the wall outlet.

Wait 60 seconds.

Plug it back into the wall first, then into the printer.

Turn it on and check if the update message clears.

This forces the firmware update module to restart.

Remove Instant Ink Connection Requirement

On older models, Instant Ink servers sometimes stop communicating, causing an endless “checking status/update” loop.

On the printer panel:
Setup → Web Services → Remove Web Services

Once removed, restart the printer and see if the home screen returns.

Re-enable Web Services

If removal works:

Setup → Web Services → Enable Web Services

Allow it to download the configuration again.

This resets the printer’s connection to HP’s servers and clears corrupted update flags.

Reconnect Wi-Fi

Setup → Network Setup → Restore Network Defaults

Reconnect to your Wi-Fi.

Try printing from the HP app again.

The Envy 4500 must be on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only.

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
