HP Envy 4520 All in One printer will not go to Home Screen.  the display shows "?" and a blank screen. It was functioning normally this morning until I changed the black ink cartridge.  I wanted to copy a document but it will not move to the home screen.  It will print from the connected via USB desk top printer.   I have tried removing printer from devices on the PC and reloading the printer, rebooting both PC and Printer, unpluggin both and unplugging  rebooting the router for WiFi connection.   The printer appears to be going thru a startup initiation every few minutes but is staying with the blank screeen and "?" mode.

Suggestions on what to try next?

Hi @DeniseAnn,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Envy 4520 All-in-One printer is stuck showing a “?” and won’t return to the home screen after changing the black ink cartridge. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Power reset the printer

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.

Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and power it on.

Remove and reseat cartridges

Open the ink access door and remove both cartridges.

Check for any protective tape or debris, then reinstall them firmly until they click.

Check cartridge compatibility

Make sure you’re using genuine HP 63 or HP 63XL cartridges.

Non-HP or refilled cartridges can cause display and startup issues.

Inspect cartridge contacts

Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth.

This helps restore proper communication between the cartridge and printer.

Start printer without cartridges

Remove both cartridges and power on the printer.

If the home screen appears, the issue may be with one of the cartridges.

Insert cartridges one at a time

Insert the black cartridge first and check the display.

Then insert the color cartridge. This helps identify if one is causing the error.

Update printer firmware

If the printer connects via USB, use the HP Smart app or HP website to check for firmware updates.

Firmware updates can resolve cartridge recognition and display issues.

Check for hardware reset option

On some models, pressing and holding the Power + Cancel buttons for 10 seconds can trigger a hardware reset.

Try this only if the display remains frozen after other steps.

I hope this helps.
