The screen on my HP Envy 4520 lights faintly but with no response to touch and nothing visible. I have tried unplugging it for an extended period of time and plugging it in again. If I hold the power button down, it won't turn off. If I press the power button quickly, it won't respond. When I use my Mac to look for the printer, it's offline. I've rebooted my wifi system. No response. on the printer. How can it be repaired or, given its age, should I replace it?

@OliverBLord, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand your HP Envy 4520 is powered on but unresponsive, with a faintly lit screen and no touch response. You've already tried unplugging it and rebooting your Wi-Fi, which is a great start. Let's walk through a few more steps to help isolate and potentially resolve the issue.

Perform a Hard Reset

Sometimes a deeper power cycle can help:

  • Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Press and hold the Power button on the printer for 15 seconds (while unplugged).
  • Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Turn the printer on and check if the screen responds normally.

Check for Display Backlight or Signs of Life

If the screen is still faint:

  • Shine a flashlight at an angle to see if there's any dim text or icons, this could indicate a backlight failure.
  • If you see faint content, the printer may still be functional but the display is faulty.

Try USB Connection to Mac

Since Wi-Fi isn't working:

  • Connect the printer to your Mac using a USB cable.
  • Check if it appears in System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • If it shows up, try printing a test page.

Update Firmware (if accessible)

If the printer becomes responsive via USB:

  • Visit the Official HP® Support and download the latest firmware update.
  • Follow the instructions to install it via USB.

Factory Reset (if screen becomes responsive)

If the screen starts working:

  • Tap the gear icon > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!

Thanks but it didn't work. First, the touch screen stopped responding to touch a few weeks ago, which wasn't a good sign. Second, I tried the hard reset as you described: when I unplugged the printer, the screen went dark; as soon as I plugged it in again, after the reset, the screen lit up. The printer is not responding to the power button. Using a flashlight at an angle did not reveal any faint icons. As far as connecting the printer with a USB cable, to my astonishment, I see no way to make that connection. On the back, next to the plug, I see a square outlet. Nothing else. Nothing on the sides. This printer might be so old that it used a connection for which I no longer have a cable. Any other advice?
