HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer

HP Envy 4520 printer screen is blank and initial troubleshooting steps did not work. I tried unplugging (for days) to drain the battery and restart but the issue still exists. I cannot do a firmware update as the screen doesn't work. What are other solution steps to fix this issue?

Hi @iam_Katy, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Since your HP Envy 4520 printer has a blank screen and basic troubleshooting like unplugging for an extended period did not work, try the following steps to diagnose and potentially fix the issue:

Perform a Hard Reset

Disconnect the power cable from the back of the printer.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Wait at least 1 minute to discharge residual power.

Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds (while the printer is unplugged).

Reconnect the power cable directly to the wall outlet (avoid using a surge protector).

Turn on the printer and check if the screen lights up.

Try a Different Power Source & Adapter

Ensure the power adapter is working by trying a different outlet.

If possible, test another compatible HP power adapter.

Check for Display Backlight Issues

Use a flashlight and shine it directly at the screen at different angles.

If you see faint text/images, the screen's backlight may have failed, requiring repair.

Print a Self-Test Report (Bypass Screen)

If the printer is still responsive despite the blank screen, try these steps to check for signs of life:

Turn on the printer (if it's not already on).

Press and hold the Power button.

While holding the power button, press the Cancel button (X) 6 times and then release both buttons.

The printer should attempt to print a report.

If it prints, the display is likely faulty, but the printer is operational.

Factory Reset via Button Combination (If Accessible)

Since the screen is blank, you can attempt a reset using the secret key combination:

Turn off the printer.

Press and hold the Back (⤺) + Cancel (X) buttons together.

While holding these buttons, turn the printer on.

Keep holding until the printer powers up and resets.

Check for Physical Damage & Loose Connections

If you're comfortable opening the printer, check the display ribbon cable inside.

A loose or damaged cable could be causing the blank screen.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for the response, my printer does not have a Cancel (X) button so I'm unable to test all of these solutions. The screen has 3 buttons: Home, Question Mark (?), and Back (). I tried using each option and none worked, screen is still blank and printer is still unusable.

@iam_Katy, Thank you for your response.

Since your HP Envy 4520 only has Home, Question Mark (?), and Back (⤺) buttons, let's adjust the troubleshooting steps accordingly.

Try a Different Hard Reset Method

Since your printer lacks a Cancel (X) button, try this alternate reset process:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and wall outlet.
  3. Wait at least 1-2 minutes to drain any residual power.
  4. Press and hold the Home (🏠) and Back (⤺) buttons together.
  5. While holding the buttons, plug the power cable back in and turn the printer on.
  6. Keep holding the buttons for another 10 seconds.
  7. Release the buttons and check if the screen lights up.

Check for Backlight Failure

Try shining a flashlight directly at the screen while the printer is on.

  • If you see faint text or icons, the display backlight may be faulty.
  • The printer may still function, but the screen is not displaying correctly.

Force a Test Page Print (Bypassing the Screen)

Since the display isn't working, let's check if the printer itself is responding:

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Home (🏠) and Question Mark (?) buttons together for 10-15 seconds.
  3. If the printer reacts (beeps, moves, or prints), the issue is likely just the display.

Check for Loose Display Cable (If Possible)

  • If you're comfortable, try gently pressing around the screen edges to see if there’s a loose internal connection.
  • If you're comfortable opening the printer, check the display ribbon cable inside. A loose or damaged cable could be the cause.

Use HP Smart App to Check Printer Status

Since the display is blank, try accessing the printer via your phone or PC using HP Smart:

  1. Download HP Smart on your phone or PC.
  2. Ensure the printer is powered on and connected to Wi-Fi.
  3. Open HP Smart, and see if the printer is detected.
  4. If detected, try printing a Printer Status Report from the app.
    • If it prints, the issue is just the display panel and not the printer itself.

I hope this helps!
