@CEld, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP Envy 5540.

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution. We hope our assistance has been helpful!

Black lines appearing in scanned images on your HP ENVY 5540 can often be attributed to several common issues, such as debris on the scanner glass or problems with the printer's hardware. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Clean the Scanner Glass

  • Scanner Glass Surface: Gently clean the scanner glass with a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water. Make sure to remove any dust, smudges, or debris that might interfere with scanning.
  • Document Feeder Slot: If your model includes an automatic document feeder, clean the slot as well, as dust can accumulate and cause lines.

2. Check for Scratches or Damage

Inspect the glass bed for any scratches or physical damage. Scratches on the scanning surface can also cause lines to appear on scanned images.

3. Perform a Printer Reset

  • Turn off the printer by pressing the power button.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds before reconnecting the power cord.
  • Turn the printer back on and perform a test scan.

4. Check Software Settings

Ensure that your scanning software settings are correctly adjusted. Changes in resolution and color settings might affect the output:

  • Open the HP printer software.
  • Navigate to scanning settings and verify that the resolution is optimal for your needs.

5. Update Printer Software

Ensure that the printer's firmware and the associated scanning software on your laptop are up-to-date:

  • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers and firmware specific to the HP ENVY 5540 model.

6. Test with Different Documents

Try scanning different types of documents or photos to determine if the issue is consistent across all scan types and settings.

I hope this helps!

Take care and have an amazing day!
