Hey @Kathydt,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that you are seeing a message on your Envy 5642 e-All-in-One Printer that it does not support 5*8 paper when copying. I can help you with that.

To start, make sure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not a surge protector. Once done:

  1. Remove the paper tray from the printer and then insert it again.
  2. On the screen click on Main Tray.
  3. Select 8X11 or Letter from the list.

Please let me know if this allows you to copy from the printer's front panel. If it does, please click on Accept Solution. If you appreciate my help, please click on the thumbs up icon. Both icons are below this post.

DocCottle,

Thank you for your reply.   I have the printer plugged into an UPS, I don't have access to a wall outlet where it is, can I use an extension cord? When you say remove the tray, do you mean it will come completely out, because mine doesn't seem to do that?

You would want to get the printer away from the UPS. Using it can interfere with the printer's operation. The extension cord would be better, but the best solution is to have the printer plugged directly into a wall outlet.

If you pull the tray out far enough, the printer will think you replaced the paper and ask you to select the paper size.

Please let me know if this resolves your issue.

DocCottle,

Thank you very much. The opening the paper drawer( I didn't even know I could do that!) worked, I didn't need to unplug the printer from my power source. I just made my first copy since buying the printer!
