HP ENVY Photo 7855 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

HP Envy Photo 7855 will not boot past first dot on loading screen. I've tried unplugging & resetting with the start button multiple times with no success. The printer is listed as offline in HP Smart so I cannot reset it that way. How can I hard reset the device?

Hi @shj526, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP ENVY Photo 7855 is stuck on the first dot of the loading screen and won’t boot, you can try a hard reset using the following steps:

Perform a Power Reset

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Disconnect all cables (USB, Ethernet, etc.).
  3. Wait for at least 2-3 minutes to allow residual power to drain.
  4. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds (while unplugged).
  5. Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips/surge protectors).
  6. Turn the printer back on and check if it boots past the loading screen.

Perform a Semi-Full Reset

If the power reset doesn’t work, try a semi-full reset (this will restore factory settings but may not fix hardware issues).

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Press and hold the Back (↩️) and Cancel () buttons.
  3. While holding both buttons, plug the power cord back in.
  4. Continue holding the buttons until the printer turns on and displays the reset menu.
  5. Select Reset or Semi-Full Reset from the menu.

Enter Recovery Mode

If the printer remains stuck, you can attempt Recovery Mode:

  1. Unplug the printer from power.
  2. Press and hold the Power button and Wi-Fi button (or Wi-Fi + Cancel on some models).
  3. While holding the buttons, plug the power cable back in.
  4. Release the buttons when the HP logo appears, and the printer may enter Recovery Mode.
  5. Follow any on-screen prompts to attempt a recovery.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for replying. Unfortunately these instructions do not help.

Performing a power reset is what I have tried repeatedly already. I did so again, following your instructions exactly and timing each step precisely, and the printer still gets stuck on the first dot of the booting up screen.

The second two options do not appear to apply to this model of printer. There is no cancel button on this printer screen that I can see, so there is no way to perform a semi-full reset following the instructions you provided. The only physical button on the front panel is the power switch. Other "buttons" are backlit indicators that are part of the flat touch panel and are not responsive. I did try following the instructions you outlined for entering recovery mode (pressing the power button and trying to press the glass where the WiFi indicator is) and I am still stuck at the same screen as before.

Any further suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hey @shj526, Thank you for your response.

Since your HP ENVY Photo 7855 is still stuck on the first dot of the boot screen and the standard reset methods don't work, let's try some alternative troubleshooting steps.

Try a Different Key Combination for a Reset

Since your printer has a capacitive touch panel, a different method may work for a reset:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  2. Press and hold the Power button and simultaneously tap on the lower-left corner of the screen repeatedly while plugging the power cord back in.
  3. If successful, a Support Menu or Engineering Menu should appear.
  4. Look for an option like Reset, Full Reset, or Semi-Full Reset and select it.

If this does not work, try tapping the lower-right corner instead when powering on.

Boot Without Ink Cartridges

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Remove all ink cartridges
  3. Plug the power cable back in and turn the printer on without the cartridges installed.
  4. If the printer boots past the loading dots, it may prompt you to insert ink.
  5. Insert the cartridges one at a time and check if the issue returns.

This method helps rule out defective cartridges or a firmware lock-up.

Force a Firmware Update via USB Recovery Mode

If the printer is bricked due to a firmware failure, you can try a firmware recovery:

Steps to Update Firmware in Recovery Mode:

  1. Download HP Firmware Update Tool:
    • Go to HP’s Support Page and search for "HP ENVY Photo 7855 firmware".
    • Download the latest firmware update tool for Windows.
  2. Connect the Printer to a PC using a USB Cable.
  3. Turn off the Printer, then turn it on while holding the Power button.
  4. Run the HP Firmware Updater on your PC.
  5. If the printer is detected, proceed with the firmware update.
  6. Once completed, restart the printer and check if it boots properly.

This method is useful if your printer got stuck after a failed firmware update.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead!
