We have two computers: OS X El Capitan Vers. 10.11.6 (early 2008), and MacBook Air Sonoma 14.6.1 (ca. 2020), using a HP Officejet Pro 8600. Two weeks ago, the MacBook stopped printing, but now is printing on HP. The OS X Capitan had been working fine for printing on HP, until today, but today it has stopped working pm HP. Any suggestions? Thanks very much. Ed

Hi @edkal ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Officejet Pro 8600 not working consistently on your two computers could stem from compatibility problems, outdated drivers, or network-related issues. Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue for both your MacBook Air (Sonoma 14.6.1) and your OS X El Capitan (10.11.6):

For MacBook Air (Sonoma 14.6.1)

Update Printer Driver:

  • Go to the HP website and search for the latest drivers for the HP Officejet Pro 8600 compatible with macOS Sonoma.
  • If no specific drivers are available, try using the built-in AirPrint functionality.

Reset Printing System:

  • Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Control-click) on the printer list and choose Reset Printing System.
  • Re-add your printer by clicking the + button and selecting your HP printer.

Check Network Configuration:

  • Ensure the printer and the MacBook Air are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Print a Network Configuration Report from the printer’s control panel and verify the network status and IP address.
  • Use the printer's IP address to manually add it as an IP Printer:
    • Go to Printers & Scanners.
    • Click +, then select IP and enter the printer's IP address.

For OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Check Driver Support:

  • Ensure the driver installed is compatible with OS X El Capitan. If the current driver is no longer supported, reinstall the last known compatible driver for the Officejet Pro 8600.

Re-add the Printer:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Remove the existing printer and re-add it.

Use HP Easy Start: HP Easy Start Software and Driver Downloads

  • Download and install HP Easy Start for older macOS versions from HP's support website.
  • Follow the guided steps to reinstall the printer.

USB Connection:

  • If your network printer is not functioning properly with OS X El Capitan, try connecting the printer directly via USB.

 Troubleshooting Steps

Restart Printer and Network:

  • Restart your printer, Wi-Fi router, and both computers.
  • Once the network stabilizes, reconnect your printer.

Firmware Update: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Check for firmware updates for the HP Officejet Pro 8600 through the printer’s settings or HP's support website.

Test Printer Functionality:

  • Print a test page directly from the printer's control panel to ensure hardware functionality.

Check Logs and Errors:

  • Review any error messages displayed on the printer or your computers during the printing attempts.

Let me know how these steps work for you!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
