When using the document feeder on the printer to scan and print copies, it will print the first page and only about 2/3 of the second page before notifying me that there is HP Smart 49 Service Error.  Any remaining pages in the print job come out entirely blank.  The printer then indicates that if this error persists that the device should be restarted.  If another scan/print job is attempted, the device restarts itself and then freezes upon restart.

Firmware is updated.  We have attempted to restart the device (turned off and left for a few minutes, turned back on); unplugged for a time and then restarted, and performed a reset to default settings.  Nothing has resolved the issue.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @LNKA4426

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing those details. I truly understand how disruptive this issue is, especially when you're relying on your HP LaserJet MFP M283fdw to handle essential scanning and copying tasks. You're doing the right thing by trying the firmware update, power resets, and restoring defaults — all the right first steps. Let's walk through a more focused action plan to address the HP Smart 49 Service Error, particularly when it occurs during ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) operations.

Advanced Troubleshooting for HP Smart 49 Service Error

1. Isolate the ADF Trigger

Since the error occurs during ADF use:

  • Try scanning/copying only one page via the ADF
  • Then try scanning the same multi-page job via the flatbed scanner
  • If the flatbed works fine, the issue is isolated to the ADF controller

This helps confirm whether the crash is caused by page feed timing or memory overflow during ADF processing.

2. Disable HP Smart Features Temporarily

Some users have found relief by disabling enhanced HP Smart features that interact with cloud services.

  • Access the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) via its IP address
  • Go to Settings > HP Web Services
  • Disable HP Smart Tasks, Scan to Cloud, and Remote Monitoring
  • Save and reboot

This reduces memory load and may prevent the 49 error from triggering.

3. Clear Print Queue and Disconnect Network

A corrupted job or remote scan request can cause repeated crashes.

  • Disconnect the printer from Wi-Fi or Ethernet
  • Clear all print queues on connected PCs
  • Reboot the printer in standalone mode (no network)
  • Try a local copy job via ADF

4. Reinstall Firmware via USB

Even if firmware is “updated,” OTA updates can leave residual corruption.

  • Download the latest firmware from HP’s official page for M283fdw
  • Use HP’s Firmware Update Utility via USB connection
  • Follow prompts to reflash the firmware manually

This ensures a clean install and may overwrite corrupted controller code.

If the Issue Persists

If the printer continues to freeze or restart after ADF use, the scanner controller board or ADF logic board may be failing.

Let me know if you'd like help navigating the Embedded Web Server or preparing the firmware USB—I'll guide you through it step by step. You're not alone in this, and we’ll get your printer back to reliable performance.
